about

June 1, 2014 Recording of Rillito River Ice Core Melting Indicating The Start Of Tucson's Annual Season Of Warmth is a historically significant recording.
Not only because of the application of the unique sound gathering techniques employed, but also because the sound of the Rillito River's annual ice melt had simply never been recorded before.
Tucson lore and legend is full of stories about river ice melting --- and the Sand Trout which live in the sand of the dry rivers --- but this is the first time the ice has actually been recorded.
Earlier this year The Rillito River ice core sample was obtained in a liquid form from the the headwaters and a hydrophone was inserted into the solution.
The liquified ice was then refrozen into a cube with the hydrophone solidly embedded .
On June 1, 2014 the cube was placed in an instrument of original design called The Rillito River Ice-O-Phone.
As the ice melted in the 100+ degree heat, each falling drop landed upon the instrument's resonance chamber creating a distinct tone.
In addition, the sound of the melting ice was also amplified via the embedded hydrophone and broadcast via an amplifier.
NO EFFECTS OF ANY TYPE WERE USED IN THE MAKING OF THIS RECORDING.
EVERY SOUND WAS PRODUCED BY EITHER THE MELTING OF THE ICE, BURSTS OF FEEDBACK AS THE PROPERTIES OF THE ICE CHANGED AND CREATED ACOUSTICANOMALIES AND THE EXTERNAL URBAN TUCSON ENVIRONMENT --- BIRDS, PLANES, AIR CONDITIONERS, CAR HORNS, ETC.
